So my new favorite is Macallan 12 Double Oak, with the Glendorach 12 second (spicier with only that Spanish oak, but sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for). Medium-full-bodied, this whisky is luxuriously oily, with a fat mid-section and sweet, syrupy peach, orange marmalade and cider-apple fruit as well as toffee. I won't disagree with the reviews that say it tastes like wood or is too mild compared to the triple cask or sherry cask. I did notice the difference, but was pleasantly surprised to find I prefer the Double-Oak. Macallan 12 Year Old Double Cask whisky has been matured in a combination of American and European Ex-Sherry oak casks. Thank God the Triple Cask was sold-out, because I've been interested in tasting the double-cask, if just to see if I'd notice the difference in price. I promise sales will remain consistent, and you'll save money by eliminating that coloring step in production. Swallow your pride and take a lesson from bourbon standards. Seriously, Scotland - time to step up your game if you want to compete with Kentucky Bourbon - Artificially coloring the Scotch is deceptive any way you try to spin it, and consumers with any standards aren't interested in being scammed. Macallan Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 12 Years Double Cask 700mL. Like red wine at 11.5%, you know… SGP:341 - 74 points.I just picked up a bottle of this, because my go-to liquor store was out of the Triple-Cask, which had previously been my favorite (I only buy scotch with no caramel color added, so that greatly narrows down the market for me). I was so glad they had added a proper age statement! But between us and frankly, 40% have now totally gotten passé. As if we’ve just had black tea that we had sweetened with aspartame. This whisky is made in two casks, one made from Oloroso sherry seasoned American oak and one made from European oak. There’s some cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as walnuts, but it feels bizarrely empty, there isn’t enough fruity kick to support those dry spicy notes. Some burnt sugar too, toasts… Mouth: once again, it’s the low strength that makes it a little too flabby and frustrating. This one’s nice as well, but it’s a little more, yeah, vague, with wee leafy smells, some kinds of dusty nuts, and this feeling of old books that can be brilliant… Or not. Nose: to be honest, I liked the freshness of the ‘Gold’ a little better. Very vague, I’d say, but as they say in Washington, it’s only the result that counts. The Macallan 12 Double Cask is a combination of American and Sherry Oak aged whiskies resulting in harmonous Fruity butterscotch flavour profile with hints of Autumnal spices. But is all that only silicone for whisky? Let’s see… Oh and this has been aged in ‘a combination of American oak and ex-sherry casks’. Enter The Macallan Double Cask 12-Year-Old. It is now stepping up the game a bit, unveiling a new bottling which uses American oak sherry casks as the more prominent flavor over traditional European oak. Macallan 12 yo ‘Double Cask’ (40%, OB, +/-2016) Ha, double casks! That’s nothing when you already have ‘four oaks’ elsewhere (Laphroaig). The Macallan is well known for taking great pride in using sherry-seasoned casks for many of its expressions.
